SCAC visits Yangchen Gatshel Higher Secondary School

The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee (SCAC) met with the Principal, faculty, parent representatives at Yangchen Gatshel Higher Secondary School at Chamgang this morning.

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme was formally initiated in 2018, and has 32 students with varying degrees of disabilities. This boarding school has more than 600 students.

Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, the SEN focal person shared that vocational programmes such as baking and laundry are taught to SEN students.

Discussions revolved around understanding the challenges of operating an inclusive school with a shortage of specialized teachers, access to resources and infrastructure. Other issues such as concerns from parents and staff on the lack of transitioning opportunities for the children were also discussed.

After the meeting, the committee visited the classroom and the campus. Members also spoke at length with the children.
