The Natural Resources and Environment Committee (NREC) consultation meeting in Trongsa Dzongkhag.

The Natural Resources and Environment Committee (NREC) met with representatives from Department of Forests and Park Services, Agriculture, Livestock, and individuals affected by human wildlife conflict (HWC) and natural disasters in Trongsa Dzongkhag.

The aim of the meeting is to gain insights into the policies and strategies of the Dzongkhag, and to identify firsthand evidence of shortcomings in existing compensation-related policies regarding HWC and natural calamities.

The Dzongkhag officials presented data on human wildlife conflict and efforts to manage conflicts between wild animals and the livelihoods and safety of the populace. Additionally, sector heads shared strategies for mitigating the predictable risks posed by wild animals and natural disasters.

In the afternoon, the committee met with the administration of Nubi Gewog along with individuals affected by HWC and natural disasters. The public representatives proposed amendments to current policies addressing HWC and natural disasters. Furthermore, they suggested allocating a separate government budget for Gewogs to support affected livelihoods and vulnerable individuals.

The Committee will conduct further consultative meetings with affected Gewogs in other Dzongkhags.

The consultation meeting is funded by the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN).

Note: The Team thanks BIOFIN initiative under UNDP for their continued support for the same.
