Opening Ceremony of the 35th Session of the National Council

23rd May 2025-The 35th Session of the National Council commenced today, coinciding with the 26th day of the 3rd Bhutanese month of the Wood Female Snake Year. The session began with the traditional Zhugdrel Phuensum Tshogpai Tendrel ceremony, followed by an opening address by the Hon’ble Chairperson, H.E. Sangay Dorji.

In his address, the Chairperson expressed profound gratitude to His Majesty The King for gracing the opening ceremony of the Third Session of the Fourth Parliament and for His unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty, peace, and prosperity of the nation.

He extended heartfelt appreciation to Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand, for their recent visit to Bhutan, stating that it would further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Chairperson also thanked His Majesty The King for conferring the Gross National Happiness Medal upon Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs, congratulating her on the honour and highlighting how such recognition inspires excellence in governance. 

The Hon’ble Chairperson offered prayers for the continued well-being and longevity of His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and members of the Royal Family. He also expressed sincere gratitude to His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Lams, and the monastic body for conducting Kurim for the well-being of the nation and all sentient beings. 

Concluding his address, the Chairperson outlined the key agenda items scheduled for deliberation during the 35th session. 

The opening ceremony was attended by Hon’ble Speaker of the National Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, and local leaders from Tsirang Dzongkhag.
