
State of Media in Bhutan
Today, the Social and Cultural Affairs Committee met
with BBS Channel 3, Kuzoo FM, and Centennial Radio this morning.
Ms. Tsedon Dorji, Managing Director of BBS Channel 3,
highlighted that the station, launched in 2020 as a Royal project, provides
diverse educational content on its 24×7 channel. The 14-member team is also
responsible for producing the local programmes. It receives technical
assistance from BBS and transmits using the SAARC satellite and NetCoM.
Mr. Ngawang Yonten, Managing Director of Kuzoo FM,
shared that the station has been on air for 18 years, focusing on amplifying
youth voices. As a Royal project, Kuzoo FM operates two 24/7 channels.
Approximately 40% of its content comprises of talk shows and educational
material, while 60% features music programmes.
Mr. Choling, Managing Director of Centennial Radio,
discussed the significant challenges faced by private radio stations in a
limited market, noting that several have closed down already. Despite this,
Centennial Radio continues operating due his personal interest and dedication.
The meeting discussed the relevance of radio, digital
media content and trends, and freedom of expression.
SCAC concludes its consultation meetings and will
present its report in the upcoming winter session.
