The Legislative Committee (LC) held a stakeholder meeting with officials from UNFPA,NCWC,RCO,UNICEF and UNDP
On
March 14, 2025, the Legislative Committee of the National Council, which is in
the process of reviewing the Penal Code of Bhutan for amendment, had a thorough
and comprehensive discussion with
officials from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), National Commission
for Women and Children (NCWC), Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
on provisions related to rights of children, gender justice and reproductive
rights for women.
Through these proposed amendments, the Committee aims to strengthen legal protections and improve access to justice for women and children, while at the same time demonstrating and fulfilling the commitments to international treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The goal is to establish a more just and equitable legal environment, ultimately fostering a culture of respect and equality within society.
